What’s a “Dev Blog?”

Posted by Mike Carruth  Published in BMXNOW.COM

A development blog (or “dev blog”), is used by tech startups, who are not quite ready to go “live” with their product, but want to start getting user input on features, ideas for features that could be baked into the first release, and generally start getting the proverbial word out.

In the case of BMXNOW.COM, our dev blog will serve the above purpose, but will also allow us to put up select content on a daily (or several-times-weekly) basis, before the full-featured build is complete. There is so much happening in the BMX universe that it must be told.

The vision for BMXNOW is to take the virtues of the long-established “magazine” format (story-and-photos event coverage, product reviews, rider and industry insider interviews, and other editorial features), and combine it with content which leverages the “gotta-have-it-now, and-as-much-as-possible” clip of Internet time (exactly “what” that will be is classified “top secret”).

The specification for the full implementation is nearly 50 pages in length, and is being built from scratch to those specs (rather than trying to shoe-horn our requirements into what off-the-shelf technology can provide). Everyone is fond of asking “is it soup yet?” in regard to the final build being “done.” Well, we’re not quoting any kind of “launch date.” It’ll go live when it goes live. Besides my experience is that a site like this is NEVER “done.” The moment you complete one feature list, you test it, fix it, and start working on the next one (which started piling up just after the first feature set was “locked”).

So, keep your eyes on bmxnow.com a few times a week, and participate in what we have going on. One day, in the unspecified-but-not-too-distant future, you’ll type in the address, and the “new world” will be revealed. Until then, let’s start the ball rolling with what we have.

Best,

Mike Carruth
